It's not all in your head!
Whether you're suffering with chronic pain or digestive issues like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, you've probably had people imply, or even tell you outright, that it's all in your head.
You and I know that's not true!
But... even though it's not all in your head, your head does play an important role in how you experience your symptoms and how much you suffer, because your head houses your body's control center - your brain! Every sensation you experience gets routed through your brain, where pain and discomfort signals can either be amplified or muted.
When people suffer with certain chronic medical conditions or pain, the communication between the brain and the body gets dysregulated, and the result is that the brain ends up amplifying symptoms. Then insult gets added to injury when the more you try to control your symptoms, the more they get amplified. This can lead to stress, depression, anger, or anxiety, which further amplifies symptoms in a cruel vicious cycle.
This would all be terrible news but it's not, because there are tools you can use to learn to harness the power of your brain to manage your symptoms, kind of like turning the volume down on a radio.
In conjunction with more traditional medical therapies, strategies based in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Hypnotherapy, Positive Psychology, and Mind/Body Medicine have all been found to be helpful in relieving suffering for many people with these conditions, reducing the need for medication, building resilience, and improving quality of life.
With practice in these proven strategies, you can experience relief, take your life back, and your condition no longer needs to define you.
